Nato in una famiglia contadina, intraprese ventenne il mestiere di pittore ornatista recandosi a Roma e poi a Napoli per compiere il suo tirocinio artistico di disegnatore. Lavorò quindi come copista a Napoli. Sue opere sono conservate nelle chiese di Francavilla, città che possiede, nel Comune, un ritratto da lui eseguito del re Vittorio Emanuele II. Senza mai raggiungere fama e notorietà, Bellafante morì quarantenne a Napoli.
